You would be
amazed how often we hear that an agency lost their data because their
hard drive crashed or they lost the data file when they were upgrading
from an old PC to a new one.
How often
should you backup?
One old adage
on when to backup states that you should back up every time you get to
a point in data entry where you wouldn't want to have to re-enter the
data if something were to go wrong. For some people, that means they would backup every
hour, for others it would be after each day of updates to the system,
for still others, it would be weekly or monthly.
We suggest that you backup no less often than daily assuming that you
worked on the system that day. Backing up takes seconds and
the file size is small enough that regardless of what media you backup
to, it won't make much of a dent.
If your data file is stored on a file server, you should check with
your IT staff to see how often they backup the server. If
they backup daily, you may be one of the lucky ones that doesn't need
to worry about backups.
What should I
backup to?
You can
backup to CDs, DVDs, hard drives, servers, internet archive sites,
flash drives or tape drives. One of the easiest and cheapest
options is to use a usb flash drive, aka, thumb
drive. It doesn't take much hunting to find a 1GB flash drive
for under $10. The average size agency could backup up to
this drive around a hundred and fifty times before it filled up (not to
imply that you wouldn't delete older backups before the drive filled
up).

It's always
exciting to get some new software that will make your work easier, but
learning how to use it can be a bit of a challenge. In
addition to the extensive help system built into RangeMaster Pro II, we
have developed a series of audio/video tutorials that you can view to
learn how RangeMaster Pro II was designed to be used. This
growing list of topics is available from our website. With
the exception of the "RangeMaster Pro II Overview" each of these
tutorials focuses on a single topic such as "How to Add and
Officer". You watch and listen as we show you, step by step,
how to use the system. Most topics last under three minutes.

If you've
upgraded from RangeMaster Pro version 1, you're used to having the Find
(search) function available on the Home Window. Even though
the Find function is now a separate window, you're still just one click
away if you use the shortcut keys. Pressing one of the
following shortcut keys will take you directly to the specific search
on the Find window that you want to perform.
F2 - Find
Employee Id
F3 - Find
Employee Name
F5 - Find
Location
F6 - Find
Firearm Serial Number
F7 - Find
Control Number
F8 - Find
Equipment Serial Number

Ever forgotten your password? Join the club.
Passwords are an essential part of security, but they're also easy to
forget. Don't worry,
we won't leave you locked out.
Version
1 users can call us and we will email you instructions to
reset it.
Version 2 users can call us and
we'll give you a temporary password so you can login and assign

because the temporary password will only be good for the day that we
give it to you. If you're not the Admin user,
you'll have to ask the Admin user to remove or change your password for
you.

Over the
course of time, data files become larger than necessary and can become
damaged for no obvious reason. Sometimes the only clue that a
file is damaged is when the application starts giving you unusual error
messages or behaves erratically. Compacting and Repairing
your data file can resolve many of these otherwise unexplainable errors.
We recommend
that you run this utility frequently. It runs in seconds and
has no associated risks.
To compact
and repair your data file:
Version 1
users, click the
start button > All Programs> RangeMaster Pro >
Compact and Repair RangeData.
Version 2
users, from the
menu bar, click File > Compact and Repair the Data File.
